Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a young child, Ford battled obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by word associations. Ford began acting during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good fit there. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but, by that time she already had made her debut on television in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
